Nokia's Android-based Normandy to be called Nokia X?

Muhammad Surya Rizal // Monday 3 February 2014

What seems to be the first Android-based Nokia handset, known until now as Normandy, might be called Nokia X in the end. At least that’s what famous insider @evleaks is suggesting today. His reliability is hard to contest, so when we see a tweet reading “Project Normandy = Nokia X”, the only thing we can think of is that this could be the commercial name of the device. Naturally, there is no way of telling if Nokia - which sold its Mobile Devices unit to Microsoft - will indeed commercialize the Normandy.

As we told you not long ago, the Normandy / Nokia X could be officiallyannounced on March 25. Before that, Nokia will attend MWC in Barcelona in late February, so it might also announce the handset then.

All the images appeared until now and allegedly showing the Normandy made us believe that it runs a heavily customized version of Android. The device appears to be low-end, sporting a FWVGA display, and can be seen as a next-generation Asha phone. It seemingly features dual SIM capabilities, thus Nokia (or Microsoft?) may want to target it at developing markets - where demand for cheap dual SIM phones is quite high. Sure enough, since nothing is confirmed at the moment, we could go on and on speculating. So let's better wait for some official info on this to show up.

P.S.:
Nokia's Android-based Normandy to be called Nokia X?
We know, the "Nokia X" moniker brings the Moto X in mind, but X is too generic of a name to cause legal troubles (we think).
